Before drilling
Checking the job, confirming scope, setting up the log set, equipment and positions.
Work done before the rig turns saves far more time than it costs.
Check the job
Open the job in GeoCRM and read:
- The Notes field — access, hazards, scope, client instructions
- Schedule & location — where and when
- The assigned crew and equipment
Confirm the scope
Know before you leave:
- How many locations, and to what depth or termination criterion
- Sampling requirements — type, interval, how many
- In-situ testing required — SPT intervals, CPT, vane
- Whether monitoring wells are to be installed
- Whether the client requires specific laboratory tests, which determines what you must recover
Set up the log set
Either create the log set in advance from the job's Ground logs tab, or on arrival. Creating it early lets you pre-enter planned locations with Field status: Planned, which then become your checklist on site.
Equipment and calibration
Confirm the equipment you need is assigned to you and in date. An instrument past its certification date invalidates results taken with it — check Registered / certified until before you leave, not after you return. See Managing an equipment record.
Site and safety
Service location, permits, traffic control, site induction, and the exclusion zone around the rig. None of this is GeoCRM's job, but none of it is optional either.
Position
Know how positions will be established — GPS, survey pickup, or set out from a known feature — and in which coordinate system. Recording eastings in one system and latitudes in another is a common and avoidable mess.
