After drilling

Backfilling, completing the record, validating positions and handover.

Backfilling and making good

Backfill or install as specified, and record what you did. Where a monitoring well is installed, record the construction details — screen and casing intervals, backfill, seals, surface completion — in the Construction tab.

Leave the site as you found it. Photograph the reinstatement.

Complete the location record

Before leaving each location, confirm you have:

  • Location ID, type and final depth
  • Ground level / RL — cross-sections and the 3D model position holes from this, so a missing RL propagates into every derived view
  • Coordinates — easting and northing, or latitude and longitude
  • Drilling method and contractor
  • Dates started and completed
  • Logged by

Set Field status to Complete only when the location is genuinely finished.

Check the log before you leave the area

Open the Log preview and read the sheet. It is much cheaper to resolve a question while you are still on site.

Check for depth gaps, missing groundwater times, samples without depths, and a termination reason.

Validate the positions

Open the Studio GIS map. A transposed easting and northing, or coordinates entered in the wrong system, puts the hole somewhere obviously wrong against a real basemap. The site plan will not always reveal this because it has no geographic context. See The Studio GIS map.

Hand over

Move the investigation from Draft to In review using the engineering state dropdown. That is the signal to the reviewing engineer that it is ready.

Do not set it to Final yourself unless you are the person authorised to approve it.

Samples to the laboratory

Samples recorded in the log are the field record. Testing is booked separately as a Work Request, with each sample carrying its own worksheets. Raise it, or tell whoever does, and make sure the sample references match. See Raising a work request.
